The brief

A family returning from ten years abroad, a steep lot nobody else wanted, and a view they did not want to waste on a corridor.

What we did

  1. 01

    Three split levels, no cut-and-fill

The house steps with the 14-degree slope instead of flattening it, which kept the retaining wall to one metre and the excavation bill off the budget.

  2. 02

A 1.8 metre eave on the east

Deep enough to keep the morning sun off the glass until nine, shallow enough to keep the city view uninterrupted from a seated height.

  3. 03

    One stair, three landings

Each landing is a room in its own right rather than circulation, so the vertical plan does not waste floor area.
